Another week down! Ok, so time is creeping on... I hear it goes faster later, but right now the days are dragging. We go for another ultrasound next Friday and we can't wait.
The biggest decision of the week that we've made is about diapering. So far, all but one person we've told has had the attitude of "yeah, right." We will not be discouraged. We're going to use cloth diapers. Dant dunt dun! Realizing we have about 70,000 more weeks to go before this decision is finalized, I did a lot of research into the subject and presented my case to Shannon. (He didn't really need a presentation because from the moment I said I wanted to use cloth diapers, he said, "OK!" Isn't he neat?!)
A baby goes through about 8000 diapers in their lifetime, all of which take 500 years to biodegrade in a landfill... not sure how they know this since disposable diapers only came out about 50 years ago. It's a well studied fact that babies in the US potty train at the average age of 2 1/2 to 3 years old. This has only been the trend in the last 30 years or so. Before that the average was 18 months old -- which ironically enough is the worldwide average today. The difference? SUPER ABSORBENCY! They don't feel wet, they aren't bothered into going potty. Also, there's a money issue. Disposable diapers cost about $0.25 each. That's about $2000 over a lifetime. For Poop! The start up costs on cloth diapers is $250. So, we're going to try it. And for those of you like me who haven't used a cloth diaper since playing house with your dolls when you were 5, let me enlighten you. They are totally different than they were when our moms used them on us. If you start looking into it, you might need to find a glossary of terms to help you because they have they're own language. There are AIO's, doublers, covers, and snappies. It's took quite awhile to figure out... I thought I was reading a Canadian website. And no, you don't have to use the plastic pants over then anymore.
Well, that's the only news I've got this week. Don't get me started about bottles. And yes, we will probably use glass if my factory doesn't work. But we'll discuss that later.
We have become those "old" first time parents who are super picky and super researched and are going to do super kooky things like read to the baby in-utero. We're ok with that.

That's so excting that you are going to cloth diaper. I hav cloth diapered Rachel sinnce she was 10 months old and we love it. I like the reusability factor and the idea that I will reduce our carbon footprint. Let me know if you ever want to talk about diapering or if you want to see what my stash is. Do you have any cloth diapering friends that you have talked to?
